The gods followed the route of the sun from Wiricuta, the desert where it was born, the same place where the world was created. They journeyed to found the Huichol Nation. During their trip, the gods dismembered their bodies and scattered their parts to form the natural elements. With their sacrifice they created plants, animals, and the fruits of the land. That is how the Huicholes became owners of the world.

So goes Huichol legend. Below are some unique pieces created by the talented members of several Huichol families from the mountains of the remote northern region of Jalisco.

Huichol art is an explosion of life and color. Carvings of masks, animals, birds, serpents, and near-life creatures sculpted from various Mexican woods are coated with wax, into which tiny crystal beads (chaquira) and colored strings (estambre) are laid or woven with great precision. In this way they display their creator's world, their religion, and their life.

The artists whose work is shown here include Teodoro Lopez, Silvestre Bautista, Julio Acosta, and Alejandro Lopez.
